Wavertree Park The Mystery

Oh England my Lionheart.

What are the wonders of the Park we speak of, it's just like any old Park and it has no lake or pond or anything to do.

It's the park of our childhood memories, the Liverpool Show, the Grandeur of a park, t he old Bowling Green, big old houses, fringes of trees, mysterious buildings, and vast expanse of green grass and shadows.

How did the Mystery get her name, well, we found out from a reliable source exactly how she gained her name.

Here is an excerpt

May 1895, it was announced that an anonymous donor had purchased the Grange estate together with some adjoining properties, and was presenting the whole 108 acres to the City of Liverpool. The donor had levelled and grassed the area - eradicating the ornamental lake that was once a feature of the grounds - and suggested the name 'Wavertree Playground'.
The mysterious donor's offer was accepted by the Council; the Playground was opened by the Lord Mayor amid great rejoicing on 7th September 1895.
The new park was immediately nicknamed 'The Mystery'. At the time the Press.

This is the athletic stadium in Wavertree Park, used to be our playground, but things must change and move on for the sake of progress.

This is how it used to look thanks to The Wavertree Society for archives.

The following are borrowed permission Pending from Wavertree Appreciation Society you must be a member to see it though.

If we find any of the actual playground we played in we will post them here at a later date, will fill you in on the history, the mystery and stories soon.
Anecdotes from Wavertree appreciation Society members.
